JAKARTA – On Sunday (2/10/2022), President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo conveyed his deep condolences to the Kanjuruhan Tragedy that happened on Saturday, 1st of October 2022. At least 130 people are confirmed dead after chaos and violence errupted during an Indonesian league football match. This tragedy is one of the world’s deadliest stadium disasters of all time in Indonesia.
On the same occasion, Jokowi also gave orders for related parties to evaluate the humanitarian tragedy.
“I have asked the health minister and the governor of East Java to specifically monitor medical services for victims who are being treated in hospitals in order to get the best service,” he said.
Not only that, he also asked the Indonesian Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs (Kemenpora), National Police Chief (Kapolri), and the chief of Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) to conduct a thorough evaluation of the implementation and security procedures of the last sport event.
Specifically to the National Police Chief, the President asked for a thorough investigation of this case. The president ordered PSSI to temporarily suspend “Liga 1” until the evaluation and improvement of security procedures is carried out.
“Especially for the National Police Chief, I request a thorough investigation of this case. To that end, I also ordered PSSI to temporarily suspend ‘Liga 1’ until the evaluation and improvement of security procedures is carried out”, Jokowi stated.
Lastly, the President of the Republic of Indonesia did not forget to express his hopes for Indonesian football. He delivered the message that sportsmanship, humanity, and a sense of national brotherhood must continue to be maintained together.
“I regret that this tragedy occurred, I hope this is the last tragedy of football in the country. We must not let another humanitarian tragedy like this happen in the future. We must maintain sportsmanship, humanity, and the sense of brotherhood of the Indonesian people,” he closed.
